Wednesday, June 10, 2009 my Mom was told that she has a "Highly suspicious lesion" on her pancreas after having an ERCP. Tonight at 6:30 pm she called to let me know that she had received a call from the doctor at Mayo clinic that they had received the biopsy results and it is indeed a tumor, it is cancer, and it is very fast growing.
So now I'll go back and give you a little history of what led up to all of this. Mom began having back pain in June of 2008. The pain is difficult to explain, but it seems to be right in her spine between her shoulder blades. Over the past year the pain has gotten progressively worse. It seemed to improve very slightly over the winter months (maybe because they were distracted by being in beautiful Marco Island, Florida!). Earlier this spring Mom's back pain seem to become much worse. She called me one day and said that her pain seemed so much worse. Being the nurse that I am, I asked her, "On a scale of 0 - 10, how would you rate your pain?" Without hesitation Mom answered, "10."
I am blessed to have worked with Mom's primary doctor, Dr. Rodenber, so I called him at home that Sunday morning and told him of the situation. I asked him since he had ordered so many tests that were inconclusive if he thought it was possible that she had a dissecting aneurysm. He said that it could be possible. He recommended that Mom go to the emergency room at OSF and have a CT scan done. He would call ahead to let them know that she was coming and give them her history and his recommendation. I called Dad and Mom and when Mom answered, I asked to speak to Dad. To those of you who know Mom well, you know that she can be a little bull-headed and stubborn. I figured that if I just told her to go to the emergency room, that it just might not be taken as seriously as if I told Dad! Anyway, Dad agreed that he would take her and that they would leave as soon as they could.
Two and a half hours later I received a call from Dr. Rodenberg concerned because he had been called by the hospital and told that Mom had not yet arrived. He wanted to be sure that she was okay. At this point I called her cell phone and she cheerfully answered. I asked her where she was and with a little bit of a tone she answered, "We're at Mapleton. We're on our way to the hospital." I questioned her as to why it had taken them so long to get to this point and she said she'd had to pick up the house a little first. Priorities! When they reached OSF she did have a CT scan done and thankfully it was not an aneurysm. There was concern though over a thickening in her esophagus and a small spot on her pancreas.
After a lot of red tape and jumping through hoops with insurance, Mom was scheduled for an appointment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. She was scheduled toward the end of April. When they arrived she had a few appointments for evaluations and then was scheduled for an ERCP, a scope to look at her common bile duct and pancreas. As they were doing this procedure on April 23rd, the scope slipped on the slick tissue and her small intestine was perforated. Dad called me and said, "Say a prayer. Mom had a complication and they punctured her small intestine and she will probably have to have surgery to correct it." I called him several times over the next couple of hours waiting for Mom to get out of surgery. One time when I spoke to him he said, "Well it looks like they're going to take her gallbladder out too while they are in there." Some time later he called and said she was out of surgery and that the reason they took her gallbladder was because they had punctured it also!
Mom ended up staying in the hospital at the Mayo clinic for an additional 5 days. They returned home knowing that they would have to go back up to Mayo's at some point to have the ERCP repeated so that the doctors could look at the pancreas.
June 10th was the day. Mom was scheduled to have the repeat ERCP at 1 p.m. As they were driving up I called and asked her how she was doing. Her reply was, "I'm petrified." I told her that I didn't know how she couldn't be, but there are a lot of people praying for her and she is in God's hands.
I called Dad numerous time over the next few hours trying to get updates and find out what was going on. Finally he was able to say that Mom was out of the procedure. They were supposed to have seen 2 other doctors, one at 3:30 and one at 4 and now at 5:30 they were on their way to those appointments, the doctors were waiting to see them. I received a call from them a short time later and they said that there was a "highly suspicious lesion." The lesion is so suspicious that she was already scheduled for surgery on June 23rd, but they would call with the final report as soon as they received it.
Mom was scheduled to have a pre-op chest x-ray and ekg on Thursday before they left to come home. I talked to Mom later in the day and asked her seriously, "How are you?" She said fair. When I talked to her a few hours later she said, "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. Remember that, this is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it."
Friday morning I called Dad and Mom and Mom answered. I asked her how she was doing and I must have sounded worried because she said to me, "What is Psalm 118:24?" Together we said, "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it."
A friend told me this recently and I shared it with Mom. Pray for a miracle, just for God to give you a miracle. Don't tell him what miracle, because so many times when you do that you are putting restrictions on him. Pray for a miracle and let him decide how to perform it.
This is my version the best that my memory serves me. I am sure that Karen, Dad and Mom will each have pieces to add. So many times people ask what they can do. For right now, the best answer I have is, "Pray for a miracle."

ReplyDeleteDear Kay,
ReplyDeleteI looked out the window, didn't like the weather I saw, but The sunshine is in the basement with "Paw". I haven't gotten much done, but "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it." The week before my verse was "Trust in the Lord with ALL thine heaert, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and he will direct your path," I can surely testify to that. I have been praying for you. Love always - Sue
We'll be praying you through this journey. Much love, The Roberts Fam
ReplyDeleteDear Aunt Kay,
ReplyDeleteMom just called me and told me to pray for you and about your website. I will try to help Mom use this website, but she may just end up resorting to the telephone and snail mail. As I read through your posting my favorite verse comes to mind. I Peter 5:7.....Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you. I claim this verse often...........it applies to so many things in my life and it reminds me the I am never out of His care and knowing that reminds me that whatever happens to me, I will be ok because He is in charge. I will keep you in my prayers (praying for a miracle) and put you on our prayer chain at church. Love, Terri (Elson) Caldwell
It is a huge encouragement to see posts on this blog. We truly appreciate everyone's prayers.
ReplyDeleteThis is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Ps 118:24
ReplyDeleteI love you guys! Mom may have a tough road ahead of her, but God is on our side!
ReplyDeleteHI KAY!
ReplyDeleteMy family prays for you daily!! We love you so very much! Maddie asked what you "technically are to her" she finally rested on Great Aunt Kay since Stacey is her Aunt. So, in our prayers, you are Great Aunt Kay. I know the Holy Spirit is strong within you and you can use it to fight the illness every step of the way. You have many who love and care for you who are waging a prayer war and will settle for nothing less than a miracle!! God Bless you!!
Hi Kay!few here:
ReplyDeletePsalm 18:1-3 I will love You, O Lord, my
Blessings to you this day as you travel with your family to Mayo. I put you on two prayer chains in Ohio, so we'll go across the continent praying for you if need be!! Stacey has often told me that you like the book of Psalms. I was reading in Psalm 18. It has many great verses, but I wanted to just share a strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shiel and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
Psalm 18:6 In my distress, I called upon the Lord.
Psalm 18:28-33 For You will light my lamp; The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall. As for God His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. For who is God, except the Lord? It is God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet lith the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places....v.35 You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great. You enlarge my path under me, So my feet do not slip.
I know this was lengthy, but I loved these verses!! I hope these with bring some comfort. I will be praying for the peace the only HE can give to your heart and mind over the next few weeks.
Love,
Nat
Hi Kay;
ReplyDeleteYou are in our thoughts and prayers. God is the Great Physician and you couldn't be in better hands than His. Tell Bernie I said "Hello"
You'll have to e-mail me sometime.
God's richest blessings.
Pastor Dave
Hi again Kay!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother suffered through cancer 3 times...she lived to be 86 years old. Some of the things I took away from her experience were 1. She said she would have never made it through without her faith or the prayers of those around her and
2. The power of positive thinking!!
I am sure you know that those who are ill fair much better with God and positive toughts on their side. My verse for you today is
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is right, whatever is pure whatever is admirable--anything s excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.
Love and prayers,
Natalie
Dear Kay,
ReplyDeleteYou should be in Rochester by now. We are thinking of you and praying for a miracle and God's loving presence.
Love,
Milly and Harley
Mom was called back to surgery at 9:28 am. She had to be at the hospital at 7:30. I would like to say she slept well last night, but thanks to pre-op bowel prep, she spent most of the night in the bathroom. She was in positive spirits when they wheeled her away. We had prayed together and she and Dad said a few times, "This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24." As we were waiting she said, "I can feel the prayers." She was calm and relaxed. Her blood pressure was proof of that, 104/68! The Bible tells us, "Ask and it shall be given unto you." Our family is asking for a miracle. I will update everyone as we are updated.
ReplyDeletePraying for you both this morning! Anxiously awaiting good news...
ReplyDeleteLove from John & Holly
Just notified...they started the preliminary laparoscopy at 11:53. We were not aware that there would be a preliminary lap, so this was news to us. Not sure, but I'm guessing that's how they determine if the surgery can actually be performed, or if it has invaded other areas of the body.
ReplyDeleteThey did proceed to an open incision at 12:10. From now, the surgery will be about 6 hours.
ReplyDeleteWe are thinking of you and holding you in prayer.
ReplyDelete~love & hugs from Phyllis and Steve and Alison
The final count is not in from the jury, but we just spoke with the surgeon. There was a mass, but there was NO CANCER! God is truly the miracle worker. The final pathology report will be in tomorrow, but they are very confident that it was benign. Mom's recovery will be the same, but because there is no cancer, there is no chemo. The surgeon removed 60% of her pancreas as well as her spleen. He expects her to live "another good many years." Truly...This is the day the Lord has made. We WILL rejoice and be glad in it! We will update more as we go and find out the definite results. The power of prayer is amazing!
ReplyDeleteThe power of prayer! We've been thinking of you often through the day both here at the house and while I was at work. Thank goodness for answered prayers!
ReplyDeleteThe Janssens
Been thinking of you all day. So glad there is some positive news. Still praying.
ReplyDeleteBob and Velynna Spangler
Just checking here for an update. WOW!!!! Rejoicing with you guys! Much love, The Roberts Fam
ReplyDeleteStacey, I'm glad you set up this blog. Your Mother is a wonderful person and I hate for her to have gone through all of this.
ReplyDeleteKay, Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I hoped to get a card in the mail before now; but of course I can't find the stamp set I wanted to use. You are special and I wanted the card to be a special one. Get well soon.
When Dwight called me with the news I started crying and wanted to jump up and down but you know that I couldn't do that! As you said, "This is the day..." I am so happy, happy, happy!! Look out Morton, here we come!!! Love ya lots,
ReplyDeleteKay & Dwight
I've got the Hallelujah Chorus resounding in my head! I'm so glad for your good news! Will keep praying!
ReplyDeleteMom finally got back to her room at 7 pm tonight after spending 3 1/2 hours in recovery. We were so anxious to see her that it was really difficult to wait so long. Dad was able to give Mom the wonderful news that it was not cancer. After the tears of joy we found out that one reason Mom was in recovery so long was that she had stopped breathing after she had been given some pain medication. She then had to be given a reversal agent to counteract the effects of the first medication. Mom also recalls being extremely restless prior to stopping breathing. The biggest "problem" now is pain. Mom said that it constantly feels as though she has an auger going right through her stomach.
ReplyDeleteMom's address here is:
Saint Mary's Hospital
Kay McCance - Room 122A
1216 Second Street SW
Rochester, MN 55902
I read everyone's posts to her and she smiled.
Dearest Kay and Family,
ReplyDeleteHolding you close to our hearts today. So glad for your good news. Mom and I were talking about your family just this past weekend (before I knew any of this news). I'll keep Mom posted on your progress and I'm sure you will be on her prayer list.
Get some rest and sleep with the angels tonight.
Brent Reese
Dallas, Texas
I believe I left this information out. On June 12th the doctor had called Mom and told her: There is a tumor. It is cancer. It is very fast growing.
ReplyDeleteThank God for miracles.
What good news!!! I think your new theme song should be "I Believe in Miracles." I hope the auger in your stomach runs out of fuel real fast.
ReplyDeleteEverything is good on the homefront. Didn't see any cats or hummers. Probably too hot. We were in the mid 90s today and it looks like we are going to get some rain tonight.
We are rejoicing in your good news and hope you get some sleep tonight.
Love ya.
Sharon
God is GOOD!!! Love you!
ReplyDeleteDear Mom #2,
ReplyDeleteThanks to God for small and large miracles. Prayer is strong and so are you. Know you are still prayed for and loved so very much. Hugs and kisses to you, hello to everyone there with you too! Keep in touch and speedy recovery. Talk to you soon. Lots of love, Brit.
Thank you for all the prayers, but please keep them coming. We get a little more information each day...it all reinforces God's power to work miracles. They are working to regulate Mom's blood sugars. During the night her sugar dropped pretty low, but the nurse stayed right on top of everything. They took her blood sugar every hour throughout the night so there was not a lot of rest!
ReplyDeleteWhen we got to the hospital this morning Mom showed us her incision and how well she can "move." Her incision is about 10 - 12 inches right down the center of her abdomen. Each time they came in to check her blood sugar she "practiced" raising her head and bending her legs. By the time we got to the hospital she was able to reach across her chest to the rail on the opposite side of the bed. She was quite excited over this! The "auger" is still going through her stomach, but we are hoping that improves some today.
When Dr. Farnell, the surgeon, came in today he explained a little more about her tumor. When the first pathology report was completed, it showed neoplastic cells, some of which were cancerous and some of which were not. He explained that with this you can't look at individual cells but how they group together. With the tumor that Mom had, 90% are cancerous and had this been left alone, it would have very quickly developed into a cancerous tumor. As it is, in March the tumor was 8 mm and when it was removed yesterday it was 19mm x 15mm. I am so grateful for the back pain that God gave her that pushed her to get all of the tests that found this tumor. There is a 25% possibility that Mom could develop another tumor in the future, but having the knowledge they do, they will follow up closely with CT scans.
Today Mom will have to get up and walk and she's nervous about that. The nurse took the tube that drains Mom's stomach out of her nose this morning and lowered her oxygen. It all sounds great, but she will still be here for about 3 weeks because this was such a complex surgery.
Mom's specific request today is that people keep praying. Just because it's not cancer, does not mean the stress is over. We will get the final pathology report back late today.
The other concern is that her kidneys are not functioning at the level they should be. Please pray for this also. Thank you prayer warriors!
Praise our Lord! We are sooo happy and thankful for all of you. Will continue to pray for Recovery and less pain each day. Sounds like you are doing lots to move about-way to go. Be careful please. Love youall, Milly and Harley
ReplyDeleteHi Kay,
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to drop a line to let you know we've been thinking about you and keeping everyone in our prayers. Such great news to hear that it wasn't cancer after all. I just hope you keep receiving such wonderful news!
John and Cindy and family
Hi all!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like things are still going the right way even though we still need to be sending messages "upstairs". You know that you are in our thoughts and prayers always. You are in a good place where they are watching out for you.
Love ya lots (as you say)

ReplyDeleteHi Kay !
ReplyDeleteYou might not remember me, but I'm Britney's sister. I didn't know about your good news until just NOW when I read the post from Stacey! That's WONDERFUL & I'm so happy that your recovery is progressing. I'll keep praying for you & checking this blog for more miraculous news!!
My Darling Cousin...my prayers, so far, have been answered! I will continue to pray as you, and all of us who love you, get through this. Jesus loves me, but you're his favorite!
ReplyDeleteMy Love,
Chrissy
Kay and family, So thankful for the Miracle!!
ReplyDeleteContinued prayers for good reports, excellent care, and quick strong recovery. Thinking of you constantly. Hope the auger slows down and quits completely before long. Sending love, John and Elizabeth
Now let's see if I can do this thing now. As I e-mailed Stacy we are both so glad thing have gone so well. It sounds as if you are working hard at being a good patient. We are still praying and find you strong in our thoughts. I know you have some recovery time that will consume some time, but that can be good too..
ReplyDeletePraying for good pain control and sending our love to you.
Jim and Sally Jo
Good news - drainage tube is out of your nose. That would make me feel a whole lot better. Did you get up and walk? We are also praying for good pain control and kidneys to function properly. I was glad Stacey gave an explanation the cancer cells - I was wondering how that was all fitting together.
ReplyDeleteSaw a red headed hummer while watering tonight. They sure haven't drank much of the sugar water - maybe too hot of temperatures.
Keep up the good work at Mayos.
Love ya.
Sharon
Just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you. It was wonderful of Stacey to start your blog to keep everyone informed on what's going on. I pray your kidney function improves, the pain subsides and you have a full and speedy recovery. You are and will be in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.
ReplyDeleteLove and Hugs,
Sally
Hi Mom #2 its the other girl! Thanks be to God for such good news. I know you have many guardian angels watching over you now. Prayers still coming your way thru this difficult recovery. I hope you are being the good nurse-patient and not causing too much trouble there @ Mayo!! Questions: How are your sugars now? Are you still on O2? How did the walking go? Yikes! Are your kidneys perking up yet? So much to talk about I know. Just know that I am praying for your speedy recovery. Thanks to Stacey for all the updates too. Very concerned here in AZ. I know you're getting the very best care possible and your family is by your side every step of the way. God be with you all. Lots of love, Brit.
ReplyDeleteSo very many words in my head and none seem right. Our families have shared too many trials it seems. Your strength and faith through it all are an inspiration to me. Betch you didn't know that. Sending love through the ether and attempting to break my bad habit of NOT praying to lend what little help I can offer.
ReplyDeleteHi Kay and Bernie,
ReplyDeleteAnother great day!! Guess it's going to be hot again today -- that's what everybody tells me. Of course, I'm fine since I'm in the air-condition all day. Still would like to be outside, but oh, well.
Hope all is going well today. Know there will be some ups and downs but hopefully it will be more ups. Know that we are still praying for you and can hardly wait until you are all better. For now though, do what the doctors (and Bernie) says! Tee! Hee! You tell her Bernie.
Love ya both
Kay and Dwight
Kay,
ReplyDeleteI am THRILLED to know that you are doing so well after your surgeries! God is indeed good...all the time! You will continue to be in my prayers. Take good care!
Love,
Jennifer Loer
Hey stac (and stacey's mom) --
ReplyDeleteIsn't is just AWESOME how God can be so powerful and we forget it sometimes!!! Just keep on believin and prayin for a full recovery and so will we!
I have gotten to know Stacey as a neighbor and friend and love her to death!!!!!
Hang in there -- we will keep praying!
Hi Kay,
ReplyDeleteThe outcome of your procedure is so wonderful! The prayers really helped!! I'm praying you have a speedy and complete recovery back to good health! God is always with you and will help you through this! God Bless You!!
George S.
Well, I thought I posted something and it is out in cyber-space somewhere because it sure didn't go here.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, what I said was, today is to be another hot one. Good thing you are in air-condition.
I pray that today will be a better day than yesterday for you and that each day you just get better and stronger. We can hardly wait to see your bright, smiling face.
Please know that we are still sending prayers up for your healing.
We love you and miss you,
Dwight & Kay
Sorry everyone! I fell behind on the updates after returning home. There is a lot of news to pass on. As of this morning Mom has her catheter out, her urine output is normal, she is off the pain pump and she is eating full liquids. Full liquids are thick liquids that you cannot see through. This morning for breakfast she had potato soup! She may possibly get her IVs out today and she should be able to shower today. The concerns right now are that she is nauseated, pain is still an issue and her blood sugar. She was put on insulin shots a day ago, but they are having a difficult time getting her blood sugar under control but she did not want to be "responsible" for managing her insulin pump. Today though, she is going to go back on her insulin pump. It gives a continuous rate of flow of insulin and that should help improve her blood sugars. I had not mentioned that Mom had fallen a few days prior to going up for surgery and landed on her knee. The first day Mom walked, her knee created almost as much of an issue as her surgery. Thankfully with rest, her knee is better also. She is walking frequently and sitting up in the chair a lot. Sleep is difficult, but Mom doesn't sleep a lot anyway! Dad is trying to keep Mom in line (nurses as patients are pretty difficult sometimes!), but I think it's a tough job. Mom is not quite ready for phone calls, but she appreciates the posts. Thank you all for your prayers and support.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the updates Stacey. I can't believe how far and fast Kay has come.
ReplyDeleteGlory to God for all that only He can do! We are so very thankful!!
ReplyDelete~love & hugs,
Phyllis & Steve & Alison
Happy to read about your progress. I know you will be home sooner than you expected. Besides there are flowers to be tended to, meals to be cooked, kisses and hugs for grandchildren to be given and life to be lived. Get busy healing and getting stronger.
ReplyDeleteLove and prayers from the Cregers
So glad things are improving. I have great sympathy for knee problems as I have 2 bum ones myself. They sure can keep you from moving around as you'd like. But...rest what you need and move what you can. Hope the sugar problem gets straightened out. Keep up the good work. Thoughts and prayers are with you always.
ReplyDeleteLove & Hugs
Sally
Hi,
ReplyDeleteGlorious morning here!! It will be a good day for Macomb's Heritage Day Parade.
Dwight helped me out on the screened porch this morning and we at breakfast out there. I told him I didn't know if that was a good idea or not -- I could see everything that needed to be done and I couldn't get too. Oh well, did enjoy the birds and fresh air.
So hope things are going better for you. Sure do miss you and our daily "chats".
Love ya and take care,
Kay and Dwight
Jessica and Jon's wedding was beautiful. Jessica was an absolutely gorgeous bride. Her dress, a halter top was simple but elegant. She had her hair pulled up and a short veil tucked in the back of her hair. There were about 160 people at the wedding and reception. It was very hot outside - 97. Delaneys really got hot. Kathy Heikes did the cake - a 4 tier round with red and peach colored roses alternated and put on each layer. The top layer had 6 to 8 on the top. It was very striking.
ReplyDeleteWe had another storm tonight about 8:00 p.m. We got 11/2 inches in about 15-20 min. and also a lot of wind.
Karen was mowing this afternoon and I had a nice visit with her. It was good to see her looking healthy,
Everything looked good at your house. Probably a coon, dug out one of your miniature roses located west of the garage. I replanted him and he looks pretty good.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous day!!! I think Dwight said we had .8 inches of rain and it is 57 degrees this morning. A far cry from what it has been.
Dwight has been busy haying. He did get the last of his beans in last Wednesday and yesterday he said he needed some rain on them to get them up. Hopefully we got rain where he needed it.
Rodney finished his beans yesterday and said he was needing a little shower. Isn't it funny -- it rains so much they can't get them planted, then they need rain so they can get them up.
I'm doing better. The girls came yesterday and cleaned house for me. I guess there is some consolation to a broken ankle. Brenda made apple and peach dumplings so now her dad won't starve.
Hope you guys are doing well. You keep up your faith and doing what the doctor says and you will be home in no time.
Love you and think of you everyday.
Kay & Dwight
Just talked to Dad. Mom was sleeping and had a good night's sleep last night. She actually slept until almost 9 this morning. The doctors are very pleased with her progress. Her blood sugars are improving, although I am sure that it will take time to get them in range. Praise God! This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
ReplyDeleteHi Mom!
ReplyDeleteSo glad for the updates from Stac, she and I keep playing phone tag for the past few days. Anyway, So thankful to hear that you are progressing well. Keep up the strong work! Many prayers for your speedy recovery. Thinking of you, Dad & Kerianna! Hugs and Kisses to you all. Much Love, Brit.
I just got off the phone with Dad and Mom. Mom has a minor set back right now. Things are not "moving through" as they should be so she was taken off food and started back on the IVs. She has a positive attitude and I'm confident this will be resolved soon. Her blood sugars are good overall. Thanks for the prayers.
ReplyDeleteJust caught up on Your news. Sounds like you are doing great. But sure you want it to be faster as we all would. Beautiful day cool and windy for which we are thankful after hot week. We keep praying for recovery and No pain and soon to have you back in Ill. with allof us. Happy Birthday Bernie! Love to you both. Harlan and Milly
ReplyDeleteHi Kay and Bernie, It's a beautiful day in IL with mild temperatures, a breeze, and sunshine. You just can't beat that combination. Thanks for the updates Stacey. Sounds like there is a minor hickup but nothing for a trooper like you! Will be watching for updates on that. Hope the pain is improving and you see lots of progress each day.
ReplyDeleteYesterday we had a "fun bunch" gathering at our home. 4 of us who had taught together were all pregnant at the same time and have kids the same age. One of those kids is a Major in the Air Force and is moving from North Dakota to Alabama. He was on a stop over here in Illinois so we got as may together to see them as possible. There were about 30 of us for the afternoon and evening so that occupied us for the entire day--after being greeters at church.
Had a really good time but still have you in our thoughts constantly with prayers going out, too. Thinking of you and sending strength your way. With Love, John & Elizabeth
Glad your blood sugars are good. Hope they soon get the other problem resolved. Was also wondering about the pain and if that was getting controlled?
ReplyDeleteIt was absolutely beautiful today. Low 80's. What a welcome relief from last week. Your daylilies are really blooming. There is a double purple that is especially pretty. Mary is watering this week. I hope you get home in time to enjoy the daylilies. The heat was hard on the newly planted hydrangeas but they are looking better.
Next Sunday our church service is a special 4th of July celebration. Holly, Velynna, John Lock, and Sue Wolford are playing Stars and Stripes Forever on the piano and keyboard. I went up to Church tonight to listen to them practice and it was unbelievable.
We are praying that the rest of the week will be uneventful and that you will soon be home.
Happy Birthday Bernie.
Love ya,
Sharon
PS. Mary said the black kitty was up to the house but she wouldn't have anything to do with her.
Hi you two, How is today going? By the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BERNIE!! Just reporting in. Weather is nice again. 69 at 7:30. Have to type up some meeting minutes, then going out to water some new plants.
ReplyDeleteHope today is a Great day. Will check back later.
Love and Prayers, John & Elizabeth
Well, once again, my comment went into cyberspace. I "sang" Happy Birthday to Bernie but you won't be able to enjoy it! Anyway, Happy Birthday Bernie.
ReplyDeleteThe weather is just so beautiful. We turned the air off Sunday and opened up the house. I LOVE the fresh air coming through here.
Am glad things are going a "little" better for you. It will take time (as you well know) for your system to get back to normal after all the meds you have been on, but you will get there.
Both of you take care and know that Dwight and I think of you both everyday.
Love ya
Kay & Dwight
Bruce said to wish Bernie a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
ReplyDeleteWell...just got back from getting my stitches and staples out and going to therapy. One thing about it, if I have a doctor's appointment in Galesburg, then they arrange for me to take my therapy there. Just one less trip to Macomb.
ReplyDeleteThe weather if very, very cloudy today and on the cool side. Nice day but would rather have the sun shine.
Hope you are feeling better today. Will be so glad when you guys are home and we can just run over to see you.
Take care and love and hugs,
Kay and Dwight
I spoke with Dad and Mom a few times today as usual. It is difficult to not be with them and still know what is going on! Mom is back to eating some food, although she is not allowed (and doesn't feel like)to eat much at any time, only a few bites. She is anxious to get home, but I told her not to rush it. I am scared that she will push things and end up having problems with her incision. I told her that and she replied, "Don't worry! I don't feel like doing anything!" She is still struggling with nausea, but she is getting 2 medications for that. Pain is also still an issue, but Mom feels that some of the pain is a result of the hospital bed! I tell everyone that Mom is a pretty tough lady. I remember a few years ago Mom had an abdominal hysterectomy. When I visited her the day after, I was shocked to walk in her room and find her sitting on the floor (on a blanket, of course) working on her Christmas cards. When I questioned her as to what she was doing she just said, "What? I feel good." Knowing that, I can only imagine how severe her pain is. She is on some pretty heavy duty pain medications that she cannot come home on. She's doing well, but still has a long recovery ahead of her. Tonight when we were talking we again agreed how grateful we are for the back pain she has that led the doctors to find this tumor. Most likely if it had not been found at this time, her prognosis would have been very poor by the time it was found. Praise God!
ReplyDeleteHi Mom & Dad!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday to Dad! Mom, I hear you are not feeling like doing much yet. Hope they are able to get your pain and nausea under control. Stac told the story of you having the hyst and afterwards, she finds you doing your Christmas cards on the floor!! I can SO SEE you doing that!!! Please rest yourself and let the staff take good care of you. NO CARDS (yet)!! Hugs and Prayers for you, lots of love, Brit.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear you are still having so much pain and nausea. Hopefully, it will start subsiding within the next few days.
Not much going on here. I'm waiting on Dwight to get back from his "coffee break" so I can go to therapy. It felt so good to get in the shower this morning!! Yippee!!
Please know that we are still thinking and praying for you everyday. Just hang in there baby!!
Love and hugs,
Kay and Dwight

ReplyDeleteHi Kay & Bernie
ReplyDeleteI am trying again to post, hope it goes thru this time.
Wish you were feeling better, but maybe it just takes a little more time. Hold on, I know you WILL get better.
It is cooler here yesterday and today. Rod came yesterday, and he notices the difference from the 100+ he had for the lasy month. I got some weeds pulled & mulch down, and most of the stuff downstairs now, (not put in place but down) so am feeling like I have accomplished something.
We really miss you---please get better soon
Praying for you

PRAISE GOD!!! Dad and Mom finally made it home last night. It was a very long ride with a lot of stops, but they made it home. Mom is absolutely exhausted, but the car was far more comfortable than the hospital bed and hopefully she slept well last night. I am sure that everyone is anxious to see her just as I am, but at this point she really needs rest. She was told that it would be best if she does not have visitors for the next week, and that she not go anywhere either. She may be able to talk on the phone more, but my guess is that she will spend a fair amount of time sleeping. Dad can still take calls though! Pain and nausea are still an issue, but overall things are improving! This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 Isn't He awesome?!
ReplyDeleteStacey, your updates are a God send; bless you for that. I am reading your messages and then forwarding them to everyone here in the Peacock and Aleshire family. Kay, you seem to be progressing as we have all prayed for you to. You keep progressing, and we'll keep praying. I'm painting something special for you, and when you are home and settled, I will send it to you.
ReplyDeleteI think of you all the time; I am with you.
Your cousin Chrissy
Hi Kay and Bernie
ReplyDeleteHaven't commented for a while, but you remain in our prayers. Glad to hear of each progressvie step. I know you want to be home, but take time and heal some before you take that step. People who don't know you are keeping you in their prayers (from our 7 churches.)
Don't be discouraged by a step back or two. Most surgeries have them as you know. And they iron out and all is well.
Happy Birthday, Bernie--a bit late. Jim celebrated his too. His grandaughter (age 9) told him she was staying all night with him to celebrate his birthday.
We are so thankful you are making progress, although it may seem slow to you. We praise God for each step.
"That my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks, forever." Psalm 30:12.
Love to you both
Jim and Sally Jo
Today is Dad and Mom's 45th wedding anniversary. What a wonderful day to celebrate. Although a celebration dinner will have to wait, just that fact that they are home and Mom is cancer free is enough for this day. I am so impressed by the outpouring of love and prayers and acts of service that have been given during this time. I pray that one day I will be a fraction of the person my parents are.
ReplyDeleteWe were able to see Dad and Mom on Friday and Saturday for a short time each day. Tyler (my 9 year old son) did the mowing on Friday before the rain came, Makayla (my 10 year old) kept Gramma company and Lexi (my 7 year old) helped Papa pick up the 4-wheeler after being serviced. I tried to help Mom out with a few things, but Dad pretty much had everything under control. Sleep and pain are still an issue for Mom, but in my opinion...she looks awesome! She is not able to tolerate much food but she eats tiny bits at a time.
It was a relief for me to read the reports with my own eyes. There were 10 lymph nodes taken and all were negative. Everything was normal with the exception of the single 2 cm tumor that was removed. Isn't our God amazing!
Hello Kay & Bernie
ReplyDeleteSo happy you are home. Everything seems better when you get to leave the hospital and finally sleep in you own bed.
Hope the pain eases soon, and you are able to eat more. Wish we could see you, but know you need your rest, and we can wait.
You know you are in our prayers. Thanks for the calls, and Happy Anniversary. The celebration will come later when you feel better.
Elaine & Bob
